Businesses in London's Chinatown are set to strike after immigration officials arrested more than 40 people in the area last week, a spokeswoman confirmed.

Workers from China, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Malaysia were arrested during lunchtime raids on five Chinatown restaurants by the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) last Thursday.

The London Chinatown Chinese Association (LCCA) said businesses would go on strike from 2pm until 5pm on Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the LCCA said she had "no official comment" on whether the strike was related to the 49 BIA arrests.

A Home Office spokeswoman said she could not confirm the status of the individuals arrested, citing their right to apply for asylum and the time involved, but added: "Steps are now being taken to remove them from the country."
