A Skipton man has lost more than £10,000 in a scam based around a Spanish lottery.

The victim, who is from the Skipton area, fell for the scam after being told he had scooped 985,000 Euros but needed to send £500 first.

The man did this, complying with subsequent requests for £2,000 and two payments of £4,000.

He became suspicious after he was asked for £6,000 and contacted the police.

A police spokesman said: “It’s very sad to see that he has fallen for it. The tickets for the genuine Spanish Lottery are only sold in Spain.

“The scam is carried out by letter or the internet. The genuine lottery is run via newspapers and television.”
