Wedding list ettiquette

A group of us from work are clubbing together to buy a present for a mate. We've identified budget and our preferred present, but now my boss wants to buy it from another shop for £25 less (obviously John Lewis are expensive!). Now am I being stupid by thinking lets just get it off the list as it'll be delivered with everything else, covered by John Lewis in case of damage, wrapped nicely etc. Furthermore, if someone else buys it that presents a problem, but my boss counters that with "well they can just take ours back". So we just end up giving them money. Is it me or is my boss being a right tightarse? Thoughts/opinions?
