We received a petition asking:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to authorise a new public inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster."

Details of petition:

"On Saturday 15th April 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were tragically killed on the Leppings Lane terrace at Hillsborough stadium. The verdict from the inquest that followed declared that no one was accountable for the disaster. Thousands of campaigners the world over, as well as the victims families will not rest until the real culprits are revealed in a fresh public inquiry into the disaster and taken to task."

Read the Government's responseThe Government sympathises with the families and friends of those who died at Hillsborough and the grief that they have suffered. In 1997/98 then Home Secretary, Jack Straw, asked Lord Justice Stuart-Smith to consider whether there was any new evidence then available which would justify a fresh inquiry into the 1989 disaster.

Lord Justice Stuart-Smith considered, in great detail, all the evidence which was put to him. This included all the relevant evidence presented to the earlier inquiries and inquests. He looked equally rigorously at all the information presented to him by individuals and official bodies, including those representing the families of those who died, and others who had acted in support of them. However, he concluded that there was no basis for re-considering previous criminal, disciplinary, public inquiry or inquest decisions.

Accordingly, the Government's position remains as set out in the statement made in Parliament by Jack Straw on 18 February 1998, which can be found on the website (new window).

I think this is the reason Anne Williams has split from the HJC. She's taking her own individual case to the European Courts (I think thats what her email the other day said).
