Tracking source of emails

Just heard that a friend (yes, really) has been the subject of some nasty emails. Not to own mailbox but to place of work with the obvious intention of defaming and undermining to the management.

 

They have all come from obviously spurious Yahoo IDs and over webmail. The police (or Polizei, in this instance) have been informed but apparently just shrugged and can't/won't go further.

 

Is there a means of tracking the IP to an individual machine or would the anonymous sender(s) have been able to disguise their origin or even "hijack" another address?
