Head-to-heads

FC Barcelona have hosted Liverpool on three occasions, drawing 0-0 twice and losing the first match 0-1. Overall, there have been four draws and one win apiece in the six fixtures between the clubs.

In 2001-02, the teams met in a Champions League second group phase match. Barcelona won 1-3 at Anfield and drew 0-0 in Barcelona. Current Liverpool squad members Jerzy Dudek, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, John Arne Riise, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler all played in at least one of those matches. The only survivors in the Barcelona squad are Carles Puyol, Thiago Motta and Javier Saviola.

European history

This is FC Barcelona's 11th season in the Champions League. The current Champions League holders are bidding to become the first club ever to successfully defend their trophy. In 1992, FC Barcelona won the Champions Cup. They have also amassed four Cup Winners' Cups, three Uefa Cups and two Uefa Super Cups.

Liverpool have won the Champions Cup/Champions League five times with the most recent coming in 2004-05, when they won their first Champions League title on penalties after a 3-3 draw against AC Milan. Their previous successes came in 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1984. They have also won three Uefa Cups and three Uefa Super Cups. This season is Liverpool's fifth in the Champions League and their 34th in European competition.

Current European form

Barcelona are on a club record equalling home unbeaten run of 17 European matches. The record of 17 was originally set between 1960 and 1964. Their last home defeat was on 22 April 2003 against Juventus, who won 1-2 after extra time. The Spaniards have subsequently not lost a Champions League home match, a club record run of 13 games.

Player and disciplinary info

Barcelona's Thiago Motta will be suspended for the second leg if he receives a booking during this match.

Victor Valdes, Carles Puyol, Deco, Andres Iniesta, Eidur Gujohnsen, Ludovic Giuly and Ronaldinho have played in all six of Barcelona's matches in this season's Champions League. Ronaldinho, Deco and Valdes have played every minute. The injured Javier Saviola is the most prolific goalscorer in Spaniards' squad with 15 career CL goals.

Jamie Carragher and Xabi Alonso are the only Liverpool players who have played in all six CL fixtures this season. Carragher has played every minute of Liverpool's campaign so far.

Other miscellaneous facts

Barcelona became the first club ever to play 400 European matches, in their most recent outing at the end of the group phase.

Liverpool are two goals away from scoring 250 in Champions Cup/Champions League matches.

Strange that all four goals they've scored against us have been at Anfield.

That game we played against them when Overmars scored was some night. Lovely football played too.

Heskey missed the worst sitter of his life that night, it should have been 2-0 and game over. Barca did play great football in the second half though.

That'd be an incredible achievement!

Why do they bother writing that sort of sh*t?

[/quoteI thought that too..they're using stats selectively..ignoring our European Cup defence by referring to its current name only.
