Awful Thing Happened Today

About 10.30 am, my wife came up to me in the office (we work together, yer see) and told me that her uncle had died last night in his sleep. I assumed that it was her uncle Mike who has been very ill for 5 years. Couldn't believe it though when she said it was her uncle Max who was in great shape, never had any health problems. My wife was distraught, understandably. I thought I had better ring her mum to give my commiserations and so on and just let her know that we were thinking of her as Max was her brother.

So, I'm talking to the mother in law about it and it occurs to me that she isn't 'that' cut up about it. It then dawns on me that my bloody wife had misheard. It was her uncle Mike (her dad's brother) that passed away. Not that this is a good thing of course. However, he had been ill for so long that it was not as much of a shock and he passed in his sleep which is the best thing that could have possibly happened with his condition.

Hope this doesn't sound blase or nowt. Feel weird being relieved but also grieving. He was a top bloke - a truly genuine fella who leaves behind two daughters and three grandchildren. He was my father-in-law's last brother and thankfully we only saw him 2 weeks ago and he was in top form. Never been to a funeral before.

Mike - RIP, mate.
