First time anything's happened there in years...

A woman police officer has been found stabbed to death in her own home, police said today.

The 28-year-old PC with Leicestershire Police was found dead with a man, believed to be her partner, at her home in The Sidings, in Oakham, Rutland, late last night.

A post-mortem examination found both had died of stab wounds.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said the house the couple shared had been sealed off for forensic searches, but they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

A file is being prepared for the coroner, the spokeswoman added.

Police said in a statement that the officer had not yet been formally identified.

She worked in the force's central area and was a probationary officer with 18 months' service.

Officers were called to the address shortly before 6pm yesterday after members of her family raised concern for her welfare.

On entering the flat, they discovered the bodies. A police investigation was immediately launched and the post-mortem examinations took place overnight.

"Following investigations at the scene and the results of the post-mortem examinations officers are satisfied that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident," the statement said.

Family liaison officers are working closely with the officer's family to support them at this difficult time, it added.

Enquiries to trace the man's next of kin got under way last night and were continuing today. He has yet to be formally identified.

Chief Constable Matt Baggott said: "The death of a colleague is a terrible shock and our thoughts are with her family and friends.

"Everything possible is being, and will continue to be, done to ensure her family and colleagues receive the support they need at this difficult time."

Alan Duncan, local MP for Rutland and Melton, said: "The local police let me know about it this morning. It is obviously particularly distressing that she was a policewoman.

"I've no doubt the police will make all the appropriate investigations."

Geoff Gregg, 54, who runs a building repairs and maintenance business in nearby Derwent Drive, said: "This is the first I've heard about this. It's a shock if something like that has happened in Oakham, it's just a quiet little market town, a nice place to live."
