Need first car advice

Hi guys.

I am taking driving lessons at the moment at the age of 29, need to get it out the way as the wife is preggers. Anyway, I was thinking about picking up a car. I have always like the Golf MK1 GTI's. I have been looking around a bit on autotrader and ebay and have seen various prices and conditions etc. Does anyone have any advice on the car or any links to help me find out more about buying them 2nd hand and prices etc.

Would it be a wise car to have as a first car. It won't primarily be used as a family car as we have the wifes car for that (Renault Megane).
