A US passenger jet bound for India has returned to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport escorted by fighter aircraft.

Several passengers have been taken off the Northwest Airlines plane and are being questioned, an airport spokeswoman confirmed.

 

The plane was reportedly heading for Mumbai and the pilot took the decision to turn back while in German airspace, although no details have been given.

 

Two Dutch F-16s were scrambled to accompany the plane back.

 

Airport spokeswoman Mirjam Snoerwang said the passengers were escorted from the plane by customs police once they had landed at the airport.

 

"A number of suspects were taken off the plane - I don't know how many. They're undergoing questioning now," she was quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying.

 

The office of the national terrorism co-ordinator had been informed of the incident but said there was no reason to upgrade the terror alert level, Dutch media reports.
