puter question - Cds ashely

My CDs are not getting read by my drive. Stoopid question but if my drive is (say) 48x and the CD is 1-52x should it still be readable?

 

Yes, I have reinstalled Java, reformatted my hard drive and hit it with a big hammer but thus far to no avail. So in complete desperation....
