Stood in the Stretford end back when Rob Jones made his debut, Burrows got sent off for us and Mark Hughes for them. I was fine, but it wasn't an experience I'd like to have again.

We all decided that 6 pages back, with one noteable exception....

He doesn't need the pace, skill or guile to take on an opposition left-back. Currently that's what Gerrard, Kewell, Garcia, Cisse et al are for - in the future I expect a class right midfielder/winger to take a lot of that responsibility. I expect Finnan to move forward to give those players options, sometimes to overlap, sometimes to ping a ball into the middle. Most of all I don't expect him to get caught out of position when the opposition break. He does that far better than most of the right backs in the league. Don't forget, Finnan is primarily there to stop danger coming in from his side. He does a bloody good job of that in my opinion. It's no coincidence that most of the danger in our defence comes down our weak left side. He's calm, he's reliable and he doesn't make many mistakes and was easily one of our top 3 players last season. As for Kronkamp, if he's good enough to displace Finnan on a permanent basis then he's got to be some player in my opinion. The boss sees something in him, so that'll do for me. Looking forward to seeing the lad come in and do well though.

I remember similar arguments when Carra was playing left back. It was always - but he offers nothing going forward...... Ironic that we are still looking for a left back that can defend isn't it. For me a defender is there primarily to defend, when he has Stevie G or Garcia in front of him roaming all over the fecking place you want a steady eddie at the back. Finnan gets forward when he's needed, but is rarely caught out of position when the opposition break. Finnan is exactly what I want in a right back, he defends well, you rarely notice he is there, but miss the hell out of him when he is missing. Reminds me a lot of Stevie Nicol if I am honest..... If Kronkamp can come in and keep Finnan on his toes and allow us to rest him on occasions then great, as at the moment Josemi doesn't allow us to do that without it being detrimental to the team
