help..cmos battery

i have just fitted a new cmos battery in my elderly next door neighbours computer and it wont let me get into the cmos settings or do anything. it also give 2 options f1 to set settings or f2 to run with default settings but pressing f1 or f2 does nothing..anybody know whats up
