Working abroad

My work was international by nature, so I knew a lot of people in different countries and was aware when positions came up. Saw one I quite fancied and applied for it. before I did I called and asked whether they'd consider a foreign applicant, as others would not. Not a company relocation, although obviously in the same field.

Aside from the visa thing and moving all of our sh*t across the Atlantic, it was just a regular job application. The visa is a ballache but HR did it, really. I had to provide some information and sign some forms. Of course we had to trudge down to the Embassy and be treated like criminals, but that was only for the afternoon.

To get a work visa now is a little harder than when I applied 3 years ago as the numbers are reduced. To get one you still need to demonstrate that you have a combination of skills/education/experience that an American cannot match. At least, it has to be clear that not many Americans can match it. If any that can apply for the job you're pretty f*cked though.

It's worth doing, but be aware of the paperwork at the outset.

Cheers for the reply, Scot.

your final paragraph has put a dampner on my hopes. I just applied for a job in New York over the interweb tonight. Didn't hold out much chance of getting it to start off with - no chance after reading your advice! Doubt its a job an American couldn't do.

Just really want to get away for a while. Don't have the luxury of knowing anyone abroad that could help me though.
