laptop problem

I tried to copy a dvd last night on my laptop.

I have done so a good few times with no problems. Anyway last night dvd shrink was backing up the disc to my hard drive when the laptop started making a loud noise like an electric shaver :ohmy:

Anyone got any idea what the problem is? Will it be something loose inside the lap top? or will the cd drive need cleaned?

:wacko::unsure:

TBH I'm probably wide of the mark on the diagnosis but a fan itself would not cost much itself but getting someone to strip the laptop to confirm the problem and replace the part would....

Have you tried playing another disk? Does the same noise occur? Do you get the noise even if not using the CD/DVD drive?

The main moving parts I can think off that could cause a noise are;

Fans - Cheap but laptop needs taking apart to replace.

Hard Drive - Normally easy to swap out but you would need to find a way of copying over the software and data. a 40gb 2.5" laptop drive would cost about 40-60quid I think

CD/DVD drive - Depending on model of laptop could be costly getting an official 'spare' If the CD/DVD drive is the problem you are better off getting a 3rd party external USB drive.

Assuming it to be a 1 year warranty then I cannot see either a fan or hard drive going belly up that quick. Did you try another disk in the drive as it could be as simple as a warped disk or that it was not sitting fully flush in the drive?

Hi I tried another disc too, that made the noise too.

what you could do, is run down to Argos, buy an external dvd drive, and backup all your stuff to dvd, after xmas take the dvd back to Argos as and unwanted xmas pressie!

if I go and join a queue at argos now I'd be lucky to make it back home for Christmas ;)

So anyway I have a few TV shows, movies and songs on my laptop will they have to be deleted as well?

I thought you would only get into bother if you had stuff like Gary Glitter had on his pc?

I would err on the side of caution, and remove any copyrighted material that you cannot prove you have purchased. You are right in that generally stores would only report the 'Gary Glitter' type stuff but thats not to say you won't have some do gooder do the repair and decide to report you to FAST or FACT for suspicion of illegal downloads.

Normally only 1 small screw and you pull or it drops out. Think even you could manage it ;)

What's the crack with that, invasion-of-privacywise? Surely if they are trying to repair a broken drive they have no business entering your, shall we say, ?al-Qu'aida Contacts Folder? or any other? Do they check all your files?
