LOST BRIT 'SPOTTED ON ISLAND'

9 October 2005

By Dennis Ellam

FRESH hopes were raised yesterday in the search for missing holidaymaker Steve Cook, five weeks after he vanished on the island of Crete.

Viewers swamped a Greek TV station with calls after it screened a three-hour special about his disappearance.

"We have exciting new leads - we're more convinced than ever that Steve's still alive," said his brother Chris, 30.

Among the callers was one from the Greek mainland opposite Crete, reporting an English man looking for farm work who had a mole on his right cheek, like Steve.

And a woman on Crete tried to help a young man matching his description who seemed confused and had suffered a head injury.

The Sunday Mirror told last month how the 20-year-old student from Sandbach, Cheshire, vanished from the crowded resort of Malia on the first night of a holiday with former school friends.
