Remember him well. In our League Championship winning side of 1946 and England's centre half in the infamous World Cup of 1950 when he was labelled England's only success. Good, solid centre half and good in the air (which may have contributed to his Alzheimers) I remember his last match in 1957 which was at Charlton in the Second Division. It was in the midst of the Asian Flu epidemic and Liverpool had eight men out and tried to get the match postponed. The League wouldn't hear of it and we were forced to play mostly reserves and we lost 5-1. My abiding memory of this match was Roger Byrne making his debut and making a ricket and Hughes bawling him out on the pitch.:hmm: The attendance, by the way, was 35,000 and that was in the Second Division.
