iPhone Unlocking

I just aquired a UK iPhone 3GS (cheaper than Europe!) which is locked to the O2 network.

 

Does anyone have experience of unlocking one of these, ideally having done so successfully?

 

If so, what's the method to follow? There seem to be hundreds of websites explaining how to do this, many of which are unreliable/dodgy, I assume (?)
