Outsstanding commission when leaving a sales role

What is the story with this in the UK/ Ireland? In my current job you normally only qualify for commission when the company get fully paid for the job. (It is a small company

 

Is it up to the company you are working for to decide on what you are entitled to when leaving? First time doing it so not sure although my Sales director has commented that I'd only qualify for what has been fully paid for. (which would leave me out of pocket of invoicd sales that I made.

 

Anybody any experience of this?
