Snookie Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Favourite DirectorsMartin Scorsese - he hasn't made a great movie since Age of Innocence but he's still the most brilliant director of the last 40 years. Even if they are not wonderful, he still makes films you want to see.Alfred Hitchcock - the greatest ever British directorJean Renoir - An artist who could draw with light. La Règle du Jeu is perhaps the greatest European film. Akira Kurosawa - an extraordinary story tellerBilly Wilder - I'm not certain he's my favourite director but he's made more of my favourite movies than anyone else Honourable mentions Francis Ford Coppola - If he'd died in the late 70s he be rightly regarded as America's greatest director. His 70s Cv is unparalleled. The Godfather I/II are my favourite movies. I dont think any director has ever got a greater performance out of an actor than he did with Al Pacino.Orson Welles - When you start off by making Citizen Kane' you should be any list of greatest directors. When you end up selling sherry then maybe not but still. He was magical at his best. John Ford - He should be in my top five. I don't know why he's not. Maybe its because he was never particularly good at directing women. I don't honestly know.Sergei Eisenstein - Technically one of the greatest but I could never emotionally connect with anything he did. The WorstRon Howard- Responsible for more terrible soulless rubbish than any 'major' director of the last 20 years. Its difficult to overstate how bad Far & Away is.Michael Bay - Pearl Harbour, Armageddon, The Rock, Bad Boys and Bad Boys II. Do you need to say any more?Richard Curtis - makes me want to smoke crackJoel Schumacher - He should have been crucified for Batman & Robin George Lucas - The one who made American Graffitti & Star Wars was a great pop culture director. The one who made the three most recent movies in that series should never be allowed direct again.
