Does the developing world need Microsoft ?

Microsoft software will sell for just $3 in some parts of the world in an attempt to double the number of global PC users.

 

Shouldn't the developing world be better served by open source software. I'm not a Linux user myself as i'm too lazy to bother. But if we're talking about providing cheap computing to the poor then why should they be giving $3 a time ( which amounts to $billions by the way) to Microsoft when there's a better operating system, with plenty of software available for free ?
