pedestrian crossings

if the lights are red, they are telling you that pedestrians are waiting to cross, and that it is now their turn to cross

 

so when they have crossed, if the lights are still red and there are no other pedestrians approaching, why do you have to sit there like a muppet, waiting for the lights to change back instead of roaring away?
