I dont get it cuff links are on your wrist - now if he'd said something like

 

Gerrard wears his heart on his sleeve with the same pride he wears his captaincy arm band - that would make more sense ... I'm not sure Journalists know how to write these days

The point of the phrase 'wearing your heart on your sleeve' is to describe someone who is outwardly passionate, I thought, where as cufflinks tend to be discreet and often covered by a jacket sleeve
