Here we are again - the annual round up of the most exciting music that has passed over the shop's counters throughout the previous 12 months - a portable version of the our recommendations, solicited by you, our loyal customers, on a daily basis, requested as from a trusted friend.

From meditative piano pulse electronics Velvet Underground - influenced psyche-rock sorcery, from a helplessly upbeat 70's cockney ska biscuit to super hooky space pop, from a hip hop lullaby to some lo-fi and no-wave slo-disco, and from politically savvy skronky dance punk to messed up pneumatic noise - we have the best of everything here, the hottest bands around, old friends returning in fine style and strong support from a host of highlights from another diverse year in music.

In conjunction with the release of COUNTER CULTURE 2006, this bonus special edition COUNTER CULTURE looks at the shop's first year of business, 1976.

Looking back, 1976 was an intake of breath, a moment before the explosion of punk and new wave that continues to reverberate. Alongside some of the great music of the time, in this collection we also have the sonic evidence of the growing opposition to the establishment - the 60's psyche and folk influence is here in the form of The Flamin' Groovies and the McGariggle sisters, but garage rock is evolving into something altogether more spiky with The Saints and Radio Birdman, while the longstanding avant garde and art rock movements, epitomised here by The Penguin Café Orchestra and Ivor Cutler, sit a little uncomfortably next to the carefree disco of Candi Staton and Bootsy's Rubber Funk.
