Jumping cd tracks

I got bought an mp3 player in October this year, and up until the last week everything has been fine. But just recently, some of the new cd's I've put on it are jumping - approx 2 or 3 times per track. Now this is actually happening during the transference of songs into the computer library, prior to transferring over to the mp3, but the external drive I use is only a couple of years old, so surely it can't be that causing it - can it? Apart from getting one of those highly ineffective cd lens cleaners, is there anything else anyone can suggest as to what it could be? I've de-frag'd the drive etc.. but it doesn't seem to make any difference
