He's been decent like. I'd like to see him play with a bit more urgency though. He's very one paced at times and content to hold his position and let others take the initiative. When he's alongside Masch he has to demand the ball and dicate the game.

Decent run out so far and a bit heated at times. We've played some good stuff. San Jose was poor for the goal and the disallowed one.

Potter and Welsh were obviously not good enough, but there's good arguments to be made for the rest being overlooked for inferior foriegn players. There's a list of names, past and present, who have replaced those lads and were quickly moved on at great expense. None of them are world beaters but they would have made more than competent squad players if allowed to develop. This scattergun approach of buying numerous foreign kids at the expense of good, competent local lads, in the hope that one turns out to be special is not for me, and no doubt the parents of many talented kids who are turning their attentions elsewhere because they know they don't stand a chance here. I understand the competition is fierce and we need to find the best possible players available but it's also important that we never lose that local pride and identity.

Barnsley fans, among others, adore him and can't believe their luck. Would El Zhar set the Championship alight? Can't see it myself. He's as average a youngster I've seen come through the ranks. A lot of it is down to politics, which is rampant at Academy's and youth set ups. With our new 'global' status, local lads will get pushed further down the pecking order to fuel this lust for 'world stars', who we continue to waste money on.

Goes without saying but surely if they're homegrown it's an added bonus? Look at Mascherano this summer - great player who plays with passion, but absolutely no loyalty to us, which is fair enough. Why would he have. Can you see any of the long list of foreign kids brought to the club being any different? This started because of the Hammill/El Zhar comparisons, and I just don't see enough abilty in the latter to justify his place ahead of a local lad with bags of potential.

Obviously it's not just local players who have passion for the club, plenty have arrived and fallen in love with the place, but in terms of bringing through our own players I'd prefer it if they were local lads who will give you that bit extra. There are plenty of examples of that, most notably Carra in recent times. He was never blessed with amazing natural ability but he's made the best of what he had through a steely determination and passion for the club.
