Maybe the three behind Torres this season will be so flexible they can each play in the others position even swapping during games, who knows. Who said Keane would play BEHIND Torres ? You don't think Keane is an upgrade on Kuyt if he plays right-side ? Keane can pay right across the front line including on his own up top. As for CL games how many had Torres had before he joined ? Cisse and Diouf played wide because they could not cut it upfront, just like Kuyt, and none cost 20m did they ? As for learning from mistakes maybe that is why he is buying proven premiership quality, and to call either Keane or Barry average is way off the mark.

Alonso had half a dozen good games at the end of the season, we played better because Rafa used a different system to accomodate Gerrard centrally and Kuyt wide, to say Alonso's return had unbelievable influence on our latter games is somewhat overstating the fact. He was playing slightly more advanced when he first came here but he should offer more creatively, spraying ' majestic ' balls along the half way line to widemen who don't stay wide is not exactly cutting is it, i'm sure he could do more, if he stays wonderful, if he goes, good luck. People talk of him as our fulcrum, the hub if you like, i think you'll find that's Gerrard. In a side with talent out wide he would excel, we ain't got it, yet, we could get it, and Xabi could give it if we got it, get it ? I think Alonso plays in the comfort zone, taking balls off defenders, not needed anymore, Agger / Skrtel can bring the ball out, higher line, ball playing centre halfs comfortable on the ball is the way forward. Playing him and Mascherano you need two fullbacks who get forward, even then one of them needs to push on. I'll give you stats, Alonso 1st season, 7 assists, next 2 , one per season. He's in the comfort zone, nothing passes that hurt no one, he has spoken this season about eventually playing sweeper ? Less responsibility and need for creativity, Italy would be his Nirvana. Put him in a side with outstanding wide players and you would see his best i hear ? He can pass, be more creative, is he holding back on instruction or is he more limited ? Life goes on.
