Getting a job in USA

Is it virtually impossible?

 

I mean from scratch - finding a job then sorting a visa then moving out there.

 

My girlfriend really wants to move away for a while. American and Australia/New Zealand have been mentioned.

 

I'd quite fancy the west coast of the US and A.

 

I'm 28 now, so i'm not prepared to quit my job (which is in an area i'd like to build a career in) and go and work in bars over there. Think i'm a bit old for that. Also, as much as i curse my current job and the people i work for sometimes, i'd still be loathe to give it up unless it was for something similar or better (in an ideal world)

 

So is it a pipe dream or are there ways to do it?

 

Also, if it's just a case of searching for a job in the same way you'd do over here, where should I be looking?
