Getting stuff off an old PC

There's an old PC here (from about 1999 or 2000, running Windows 98) and it's being replaced by a not-quite-so-old machine running Windows XP - bigger disk, faster processor, etc.

 

The problem is how to get the data off the PC and onto the new one. I've already transferred a load of Word documents across by zipping them up and emailing them to myself, but the photos on the PC occupy over 600 Mb and this is too big, apparently.

 

The old machine has no CD or DVD writer so that's not an option. Is there any other reasonably practical way to do it, short of going out and buying an external CD writer, and/or hard drive, etc?
