A nursery teacher has been suspended after an alleged fight over a Christmas tree.

The woman at Busby Primary School's nursery in East Renfrewshire was sent home after a dispute over where the festive decoration was placed.

She allegedly struck another female teacher in front of some of the three and four-year-old children and their parents at the school in Clarkston.

The dispute happened on Monday last week, and the teacher was suspended on full pay the next day after the allegation was made.

A spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council said an internal investigation was under way into what happened.

Police have not been called in.

The spokesman said: "This was a dispute over a Christmas tree.

"The teacher who was allegedly assaulted asked for the police not to be invited, and asked for it to be resolved via the council."

He added: "Some pupils did see the incident and some parents.

"Various witnesses will be interviewed about the matter."

The Christmas tree in question has been erected and decorated in the nursery, which caters for about 115 toddlers.
