An 84-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten on the head with a hammer at a petrol station in County Armagh.

The attacker walked into a garage shop at Main Street, Waringstown, on Monday night and began to smash it up.

"Staff and customers were fearing for their lives. Another guy tried to intervene but he was too powerful," said shop manager Jennifer Magill.

"Then he went out and went ballistic in the forecourt." The man smashed cars before beating the elderly man.

He suffered a head injury and is in a stable condition in Craigavon Area Hospital.

One person is being questioned about the attack.
