Carragher the role model for our youth team...

With the 1st leg of the youth cup final tonight ive heard it said that the current crop dont have an Owen or Gerrard amongst them which is true, however that doesn't mean 1 or 2 of the current youth team couldn't become 1st team regulars.

Jamie Carragher is the prime example of this, he never stood out like Owen or Gerrard did coming through the ranks, yet with hard work, amazing dedication and consistency and unrivaled will to win hes become one of our most important players. He is the clear example to our youth team players that you don't have to stand out like Owen or Gerrard did to make it here.

There are 2 or 3 of the current crop that have a little bit of Carragher about them, Spearing, Ryan and maybe Threlfall are 3 players that maybe aren't super talented but with the right attitude they could become part of the first team squad, they should look at Carragher as a gauge to where hard work, 100% commitment every week and consistency of performance can get you.

It's a good point but harder to do nowadays I think, especially with a bigger and better first team. Say we're challenging for the league every year for the next 2-4 years (when these lot will try to establish themselves), it's gonna take a lot of injuries and a huge amount of belief and conviction from the manager for players to get a look into the side on a regular basis. Carragher started slowly but under Houllier established himself in the defence even though he came under a fair bit of stick

I think there'll be a trend for those who aren't "special" (in the class of Owen, Rooney etc) to go out on loan for at least a season or two to show a bit of potential and then come back into the squad. Bit like Warnock. They're just not going to get the match time in the first team squad. Mancs are the same - Fletcher and O'Shea seem to be the only recent exceptions.

That's the problem in modern day footie...not enough subs to put kids on the bench in the PL and difficult to paly them in the PL with us needing to win every game and no easy games. I think Rafa has tried to use the carling cup and the odd early cl fixture to give kids a run out.

Don't the mancs send their kids to their feeder belgium club? I know O'Shea went there and that chinese lad has played 2 seasons on loan there.

It's why i'd like to see something along the lines of the subs extended to a maximum of 7 with atleast 2 of those having to be under 21.
