Anyone recommend any decent video editing software?

Getting a mini DV cam for Christmas and on the look out for some decent editing software -with a view to publishing on the web (nowt dodgy).

 

Anybody got some experience with some decent software, free or paid for, which will allow me to edit audio, video, do fades etc?
