Internet Connection Sharing - Who Needs it?

I just downloaded and installed this free proxy server:

 

Analog Proxy

 

set it up with my local IP address (this is important to avoid providing a spamming service to the world, apparently)

 

configured Firefox on the other machines to use the proxy and VOILA!

 

And this after about 3 attempts to get MS Windows Internet Connection Sharing to work - without success.

 

Has anyone succeeded with this and/or can recommend a better proxy server? I've read that Apache (which I've actually got running) can do this but it's not clear how.
