Cheap PC speakers

Are they really crap? Something around £15-20 anyway. I've only got a small room and don't really need music blaring out on top class surround sound with huge amounts of bass or anything but just a couple of speakers on my desk that's notably better than the in built laptop speakers. Each speaker about 3 watts + subwoofer of about 4 - will these do a job or am I better off just sticking with the inbuilt speaker or stop being such a tight a***?
