A policewoman watched as a seven-year-old boy ran across a dual carriageway and died after being hit by a car, officers said today.

She had stopped on the side of the A47 dual carriageway in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, after seeing three small children playing near the road.

Police investigating the accident believe the youngsters scattered at the sight of the police car. One ran from the central reservation into the road and was hit by a passing car.

The spokesman said the policewoman was "being supported" following the accident shortly after 1pm yesterday.

He said the driver of the car involved was unhurt but treated for shock.

The incident has been reported to the police complaints authority and a police investigation is under way.
