Help! Apple OSX & Ipod problem

good afternoon folks...I'm trying to sort out a problem for some friends with their kid's Ipod. It works fine on the new Mac laptop...but on the kid's computer there's a major error. It seems the Mac is only 10.3.9 and the Ipod needs at least 10.4.8 to function.

 

Can it be simply fixed by installing an update - i.e. to 10.5 (??) or is that against some licencing agreement?

I'm not very savvy with Macs anymore..

 

solutions & suggestions please?
