Museum horror as man dies in 40ft plunge

A man stabbed a woman to death in a busy museum today then fell to his death from a balcony.

The man died after falling or jumping from a third-storey balcony inside the World Museum Liverpool, in the city centre, at 12.20pm.

A woman was found near the balcony from where the man fell. She had been stabbed.

The pair, understood to be in their late teens or early 20s, were taken to hospital but later declared dead.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police would not comment directly on the theory that the man killed the woman before committing suicide.

However, he did confirm that the man and woman, who were visitors to the museum, knew each other.

He added that the woman's injuries were not self-inflicted, and that nobody else was being sought in connection with her death.

Superintendent Oz Billings, of Merseyside Police, said: "Both the man and woman were taken to hospital but, despite the efforts of paramedics and hospital staff, they have both died.

"Officers are currently conducting interviews with witnesses, and the museum has been closed."

World Museum Liverpool, on William Brown Street, was previously known as Liverpool Museum but opened under its new name in April 2005, following a major refurbishment.

It is free to enter and boasts a number of interactive and fun exhibitions that are popular with children.

Members of the public were present during today's incident.

It is the second time this year that a man has fallen to his death in the museum.

In May, 24-year-old Alexander Dutton climbed over a balcony on the sixth floor and apparently jumped.

The university graduate was due to face drug charges in court, but Liverpool Coroner Andre Rebello did not record a verdict of suicide because he said there was no evidence Mr Dutton wanted to take his own life.

The museum was closed following today's incident and is likely to remain closed tomorrow, according to police.
