I know Rafa said he was bringing in Kuyt as an alternative to Crouch, but I don't think it's going to work out that way.

Kuyt comes with a reputation of being good in the air but he's no Crouch or even Heskey when it comes to trapping high balls or winning the majority of flick-ons. He may score a lot of headed goals (I hope) but that doesn't mean he can play as a target man (the role that Drogba carried out almost to perfection yesterday). He is just not tall or big enough despite his eagerness and work-rate. Luis Garcia is arguably our best header of the ball when it comes to putting the ball away but that doesn't mean he can play as the target up front - they are two very different qualities.

The bottom line is that if Crouch isn't playing we need to play the ball on the ground. It would also help, whether Crouch is playing or not, if Pennant actually tried to pick someone out with his crosses. Time after time yesterday it seemed to be hit-and-hope - a low percentage strategy with Bellamy and Kuyt playing against Terry and Carvalho if ever there was one. The one moment df danger I recall Pennant creating was when he pulled the ball back for Finnan, who should have done better.

Ah, well, I'm still optimistic we'll have a reasonably good season. This is a better team than last year, I don't see how anyone could argue otherwise.

We need to play the ball along the ground whether Crouch is playing or not. Crouch is wasted if we just send hopeful long balls to him all the time.

Pennant was frustrating on sunday put one great cross in which Crouch decided to tap straight into Cech's arms.
