Bulgarian Football Boss Fined for Sex Insult

The owner of Levski Sofia was penalized by UEFA for calling a British referee ?homosexual.?

28 April 2006, Friday.

Todor Batkov and his club Levski Sofia were fined by UEFA Friday, after a sexually discriminating public statement.

Batkov will have to pay CHF 5 000 personal fine for labelling referee Michael Riley a "homosexual," UEFA decided, after considering a turbulent Levski clash with Germany's Schalke 04 last month.

Batkov's club also faced financial sanctions of a total of CHF 65 000, for the owner's insulting statements as well as for racism of the team's supporters.

"This British homosexual broke the game," were Todor Batkov's exact words after the dramatic home clash with Schalke, which ended 1-3.

It had started with an early lead for Levski, but then Briton Riley sent off attacker Sedrik Bardon and seemed to turn the tide against the "blue". Schalke were quick to take advantage of outnumbering their rival, and reversed the score.

Clashing with Schalke sent Levski out of the UEFA Cup, after a historical success of reaching the quarterfinals.
