Gilps Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Nastier than the Nasty Party UKIP seeks to target Tory voters This t*** said other parties were too focused on the 'centre ground' The UK Independence Party is launching a review of its policies, focusing more on domestic issues, to try to woo Tory voters in May's local elections. The party's European Parliament leader, Nigel Farage, said the policies would be "to the right" of the Conservatives. He said: "David Cameron is abandoning traditional Tory ground... It's a tremendous political opportunity." The policy review, to be unveiled on Tuesday, will look at education, trade and wider constitutional issues. 'Tremendous opportunity' Mr Farage said: "We have got three social democratic parties scrabbling around in the middle." He added: "There are millions of people out there who feel there is no one to speak for them." Mr Farage said UKIP did not want to be seen as a party which campaigned only on withdrawing from the EU and the issue of immigration. Mr Farage added: "We will be repositioning ourselves to the right of centre because there is nobody else there." He also said: "We still want people who have been Labour or Liberal Democrat to vote for us." The party will outline five areas where it is looking into its policies at the event in London. Mr Farage said: "We have the potential as a party to pack a very big punch." In the 2004 European elections, UKIP took 16.1% of the vote. However, in last year's general election it got 2.2% of the UK vote, and failed to take any seats.
