The Hitman

2nd best batsman after a certain Brian Lara.. if Lara was in a top team Id expect him to average over 60..a player born in the wrong era for a west indian

sorry man, tendulkar is the best. we weren't very good at all when he came in to the team....he transformed the one day batting and gave solidity to our test line up. simply the best and probably the best indian batsman ever.

Leading test averages amongst active players;

1. Rahul Dravid - 57.43

2. Jacques Kallis - 57.07

3. Sachin Tendulkar - 57.05

8. Brian Lara - 53.86

Kallis gets my nod over Dravid because I'm biased and am confortable with bias over .36 of a run per inning.

In the world class batsman list a few more you can add,

Dravid, Laxman, Hayden....

Dravid, yes. Laxman ... you're having a f***ing laugh. Sehwag's test average is better than his. Hayden, Smith, Ponting, Gilchrist (because he averages more than 50 with a strike rate around 100) - all a class above.

Bulls*** Rahul Dravid is a better bat than Sachin or Lara.Averages don't show everything, look at who's scored the most centuries in world cricket.

Look at who Lara has had to play with, and what situations he's been placed in,when he's scrabbling about on his own, under intense pressure.

Tendulkar and Lara are out on their own,as geniuses with the bat,the rest are very, very good batsmen.

So when Kallis gets to 10 000 runs, he too will be classed a 'genius'?

He's a very good batsman,a very good grinder-as many people here have said.He will go down as one of the best, but he doesn't possess the quality that Lara or Sachin have.

Lara,in particular, has an outstanding record for a player who has played in such a poor quality side for so long.

Lara has 31 hundreds!!!!

He has a highest score of 400,against a quality on-form attack in the England series.

Tendulkar has 35 hundreds,with a highest score of 248.

Kallis has 22 hundreds, and has never hit a double hundred.

Kallis is top-class,but those two are legends.

So averages don't count, but number of test hundreds, double hundreds, etc do.

Lara's also played with Walsh, Ambrose, Richardson, Marshall, Bishop, Adams, Chanderpaul, Sarwan and loads of other excellent players so it seems unfair to hold that against Kallis or anyone else for that matter.

PS: Kallis made a phenomenally slow start to his career. If you ignore the first 40 innings he played where he averaged around 30, his test average stands at 65. He's played 157 innings (50 fewer than Lara) and at a similar point in Lara's career, he was only 500 runs ahead. Thats 2 or 3 decent knocks.

Not even gonna dignify the "Kallis better than Sachin" statement

Best technican I've ever seen, Sachin, not just the undoubted ability that he has, but his extreme hunger for runs and success, something you can say BC Lara lacked during the middle part of his career

His technique, when on song, is flawless, every shot he plays is perfection, even his footwork to spinners. Will never forget his duels with Shane Warne, when he more often than not come up on top

Ignoring 40 innings of cricket?!?!

That's quite a lot to ignore.I understand the argument, and lots of people use the same argument when considering Flintoff's argument.

Of course averages count, but Lara and Tendulkar have hit more runs, have made consistently bigger scores, and played with weaker players.

Accept it,Lara and Sachin are a step above Kallis.

How much better is Kallis's average compared to Sachin's anyway?0.2 or something?

Kallis's record is questionable

He's scored half his tons against Zimbabwe and Worst Indies, he always murders the Windies, coz they're so s***.

His record against all nations bar 3 is superb, and the 3 he doesn't do so well against are:

Australia, a pathetic average of 34 with only one ton

Pakistan, 38 and a ton

Sri Lanka, 33 and no tons

If you're gonna proclaim to be the best, then he's gotta do a lot more than 34 against the best team in the world, instead of being a flat track bully and smash the hapless Windies.

In contrast, Sachin's record against all countries:

Aus, average of 53 with 7 tons, including that double ton in Sydney

England, 6 tons at 76

Kiwis, 48 with 3 tons

Pakistan, 42 with 2 tons

South Africa, 37 with 3 tons

Sri Lanka, 76 with 6 tons

Windies, 57 with 3 tons

3 tons against the Zimmers and a ton against the Bangers with average in the 160s

All around record is superb, apart from a glaringly ordinary record against South Africa.

You can prove anything with stats, you can even twist them in a way to prove that Gavin Robertson's a good bowler. The fact is, I don't need stats to know that Kallis is not fit to lace Sachin's boots.

That seems fairly extensive to me.

As for Lara, the man has hit 400!!!

Against an on-fire bowling attack in the fourth test against England.Harmison was deadly in that series, and Lara was playing with some seriously, seriously poor players.

He's hit an innings of 375 too, although against an admittedly limited England attack.

Kallis can only dream of those kinds of scores,he hasn't even hit a double century.Jacques himself would never claim to be as good as Lara.

which begs the question why his average isn't stratospherically higher than everyone else's?

It used to be, I remember a couple of years ago his average was 58 and he was batting so well at the time I thought he'd top 60 sooner or later, then he got that dodgey elbow for 2 years and played a couple of Tests in between where he didn't do very well

And stats nowadays are growing meaningless, they're still useful, but because of s****house Test nations like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and the Windies, the value of stats is lessening.

BC Lara's average a couple of years ago was only 49, mind you, he doesn't get a lot of red ink (Not outs) to boost his average. It's now 53
