Soundtracks (split from What are you listening to right now)

Recommended Posts

Got the Inception soundtrack on while working, by Hans Zimmer. Did not know that Johnny Marr played guitar on it.

I like that soundtrack, didn’t know Marr contributed either.

Also like the soundtrack to ‘there will be blood’

What other films can we name with a great score, not individual songs.

Should be a thread really.

If not it’s own thread, certainly a genre on Allerton’s iPod

It is a thread of its own. Anything by Clint Mansell, particularly Moon. Any of Zimmer's. Sunshine by John Murphy, most of Johann Johannsson's are good, always liked the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack by Trevor Jones. The Sting. Pretty much everything by John Williams, obviously.

I've been tempted to have a dabble with the soundtracks from Motherless Brooklyn and Midsommer, both of which are supposed to be good but not having seen the fillums they come from I'm not so sure.

I listen to a lot of Johan Johansson' stuff - some of it is soundtracks. Some of his standalone stuff is incredibly beautiful - the soundtracks are a bit edgier but still great.

Some of Carter Burwell's soundtracks for the Cohen Bros are brilliant - True Grit in particular.

Joe Hisaishi's studio Ghibli stuff is lovely too.

I've got a couple of nice Spotify playlists of film music, I'll edit the s*** out and post here.

Miller's Crossing and Fargo soundtracks are amazing. Just stunning stuff.

Where do we stand on OST vs ST? Clearly there are some fantastic STs - Tarantino, Alex Cox, Jonathan Demme all do them really well. But for me, they are really just glorified playlists. The real deal is the OST, Zimmer, Barry, Johansson etc.

I think my two favourites are both from Ennio Morricone - Cinema  Paradiso and Once Upon A Time In America.

Almost anything by Zimmer, Mansell, Reznor & Rose, Richter, Mogwai, Johansson and if course, John Williams.

For playlist soundtracks, I still love the one from the otherwise forgettable That Summer! (the 1979 film with a young Ray Winstone); any album with Rockaway Beach, Another Girl Another Planet, Blank Generation, Watching The Detectives, Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll AND Teenage Kicks on it will always make me happy.
