I’ve just heard a report on radio 4 saying a the infections in Bolton are down to one man who was asymptomatic and went to a few pubs, the utter symptom free following the guidelines b*****d.

it’s just so Red Wall isn’t it, just how they like things in them places

I don't know all the details tbh and I'm cautious about stigmatising individuals,  but I think the story was that he broke a post-holiday quarantine at the time he went on the pub crawl, so a bit more to it than just 'he visited a few pubs '

News of our kitchen has spread around Bham - we've been doing deliveries over but now there's a Q at the door each night. Planning meeting tonight to decide how to cater/cope. Heartbreaking stuff. And

Due to be announcement from Whitty and Vallance today and Johnson tomorrow - sounds like further restrictions on their way?

London and South East only a few days behind the North in terms of wave of new cases so could be restrictions imposed there too.

Vallance saying numbers of new cases doubling every 7 days, approx 6k new cases a day (not sure why released figures have been less).

The tone seems very much like they're preparing the way for further restrictions.

They're not taking questions and the Prime Minister isn't there. Good to see they're taking it seriously at last then. Might as well have Laura Kuenssberg just read out a press release.

She put out a few things earlier, national lockdown not an option being the main one.

Yeah they're punting the line that they're "following science" so Whitty and Vallance today and then Johnson tomorrow.

The briefing from Whitty and Vallance was actually quite effective in terms of laying out the risks.

Rumours of a two week "mini lockdown" to be announced tomorrow.

I'd say about a week away from a second lockdown

Can't see how they avoid doing something serious after that briefing. They've painted themselves into a corner with their determination to avoid another lockdown and to extend furlough. But if they try curbing social stuff again (shut bars and restaurants and stop households meeting) and still insist it's safe to go to work, who's going to take any notice of it?

Not the same as before but close.

They'll do it in an attempt to prevent a longer one happening near Christmas, which would be disastrous

Yeah. Imagine schools and offices will remain open. Don't think they'll limit time outside for exercise again though. Would be surprised if hospitality was completely shut down again as well.

What's left after those? Stopping households mixing? Which is practically pointless while all the other stuff is going on.

It'll probably be 7 or 8 close for pubs, though the nearest one to me with Sky and BT is probably one of the safest places around at the moment, with strict socialising restrictions, hand sanitiser use and track and trace; the place next door which is busy for meals etc has no t&t.

In terms of mixing with friends and family there's not much further they can go without banning any mixing with anyone outside of your household or bubble but then unless they also want to shut pubs and restaurants - then being able to mix with strangers in those places whilst not any family outside of your household does seem counter intuitive.

They made reference to pubs and restaurants being areas of concern in terms of transmission in the briefing this morning but closure seems like the opposite of what they want to do.
