184,000 in the US now - practically double everywhere else except Italy and not long before it's double there

Yes it's the 3rd most populous nation and I don't really believe China or India's numbers save that maybe they just aren't testing but per capita it'll be leading the way in about a week

As bad as this virus is, I can’t escape the feeling that it’s a starting point for something else.
I see so many people thinking that their politicians are guiding them through this. ( not people on this forum, but the electorate that voted for Johnson and trump)

It feels for the first time in my life that the door for totalitarianism has been left ajar.
It’s not about socialism, because conservatives ought to be wary of what comes next.

Could go either way

the bad ‘isms’ of the past and present all relied/rely on control of the media

thats how the rulers of North Korea and China  are getting away with their s***

And what  they’re doing is in a different league of criminality to what Trump and Johnson are doing

for the latter and their ilk to  bridge the gap they’ll have to control social media

I was making a wild, unsubstantiated leap based on the uncertainty and economic devastation this will leave.
It’s a much more serious upheaval than the crash of 2008.

To be clear I’m not saying bad dictators will appear next year, but that structures will be loosened and  we don’t know what will be the latest simple solution that gets floated, like Brexit, or MAGA, seizing the Crimean peninsula,  or devastation of the Syrian and Yemeni people.
Of course, some smart guys in Silicon Valley might develop an app that allows everyone to travel great distances and be rich.

Yeah there’s gotta be a way of cleaning up on the Coronavirus

Trump throwing Johnson under the bus at the moment.

Someone had better find out what changed on March 12 for both governments

On a more serious note, it is pretty clear that this government are clearly not competent enough to deal with this crisis (or anything else for that matter) and Labour and the other parties should start insisting that they stand aside. I don't think they could be more useless if they tried. Eton, eh? f***ing hell. Even the Daily Mail is turning on them.

What are the reasons why the opposition won't do this?

a) Lack of unity

b) No leader in place, frontrunner a bit of a wet lettuce

c) The polls

d) Feverish obsession with playing by the rules, despite knowing we would already have had a coup if the Tories were in opposition

Combination of C & D in my opinion. They'd get absolutely hammered for playing politics. I said a couple of weeks back Johnson should be sidelined and it should be cross party leadership of the best minds at a time like this. Not sure how that works in practice but they are all grown ups.

Why don't you believe China and India, but you do believe the US?

Gary Holt in Exodus was on tour in Europe early last month. He felt ill after returning to the US after everything was cancelled and got the positive result yesterday. He says it took 11 days after he was tested to get the result and that he's already started feeling good again before even getting the result. With that kind of lag even for people who actually get tested, who knows what's really going on there.

I'm getting daily updates from India.  They are on it out there.  Anyone developing symptoms of CV is eligible for testing in principle. It's not practical for them to do anything else right now. Testing record is poor but they are catching up.

My uncle has got it now.

He's also got untreatable lung cancer that has spread throughout his body. He only had about 6 months at best but this should finish him off in days. He's been allowed to go home from hospital and die.

Ahh f***, sorry Dan. Awful news.

Turkmenistan has banned the use of the word coronavirus. People wearing face masks risks getting arrested. They've reported zero cases. Next door neighbour Iran has 47,000 cases (probably more)
