Bleep's to 10

1 - a Barbieri – Ecstatic Computation

2 - Allesandro Cortini – VOLUME MASSIMO

3 - Flying Lotus – Flamagra

4 - FKA twigs – MAGDALENE

5 - Rian Treanor – ATAXIA

6 - Nathan Micay – Blue Spring

7 - Klein - LIFETIME

8 - Danny Brown – uknowhatimsayin¿

9 - Barker – Utility

10 - Lee Scratch Perry – Rainford

i only have 2 of those - Twigs & Danny Brown, and while I kind of liked Lee Perry's LP, it wasn't good enough to make a best of list IMO, let alone a top 10.

Will check out the others

The Barbieri album is magnificent.

Volume Massimo is a bit of a curveball for Cortini - quite a bit of it is familiar but some of it sounds quite 'stadium' in places whereas his previous recordings have been resolutely lo-fi in nature. Well worth getting though

The Flying Lotus album is a bit of a mess and I just can't connect with his stuff at all - far too showy for my liking. It's like, 'so what?'

Too many drums on the others for my liking  ;)

Really liked some of his earlier stuff, I know I know, but stopped following a few years back because of exactly this

Moodymann's Sinner is ace. Purple Mountains was good too, I've heard Loyle Carner every single day since it came out and not minded, and Dave's album was good (was that this year?). Daniel Caesar not so much tbh.

Floating Points is a stunner.

Dave's was indeed this year and the Carmer is brilliant as was Little Simz and slowthai

I'd have been more impressed if number 5 was Shalamar by Big Fun.

Seconded. Sometimes, I wonder if this is just namedropping?

I think it is - I don't think anybody actually listens to these records either. Most of the bands probably don't even exist! And even if they do exist, why do these people feel the need to write new music? Why can't they just like what we liked 40 years ago?

A little later than I usually do it but here is my survey of surveys around the best albums of the year. Similar rules to previous years (only websites or journals with a top thirty or more albums listed, only lists which include multiple genres - no specialist websites - albums must appear in at least three separate lists, 30 points awarded for a number one spot, 1 for a thirtieth slot). The results are:

1 Lana Del Rey - Norman f***ing Rockwell

2 Big Thief - U.F.O.F.

3 FKA Twigs - Magdalene

4 Angel Olsen - All Mirrors

5 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen

6 Weyes - Blood Titanic Rising

7 Solange - When I Get Home

8 Sharon Von Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow

9 Purple Mountains-  Purple Mountains

10 Little Simz - Grey Area

11 Vampire Weekend - Father Of The Bride

12 Fontaines D.C. - Dogrel

13 Tyler The Creator - Igor

14 Brittany Howard - Jaime

15 Jessica Pratt - Quiet Signs

16 Billie Eilish - When We all Asleep, Where Do We Go?

17 Black Midi - Schlagenheim

18 Michael Kiwanuka - Kiwanuka

19 Kano - Hoodies All Summer

20 Jenny Lewis - On The Line

21 Loraine James - For You And I

22 Bill Callahan - Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest

23 Anthony Naples - Fog FM

24 The Comet Is Coming - Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery

25 Jenny Hval - The Practice Of Love

26 Dave - Psychodrama

27 (Sandy) Alex G - House Of Sugar

28 Slowthai - Nothing Great About Britain

29 Aldous Harding - Designer

30 Jamila Woods - Legacy! Legacy!
