2019/2020

7th tier asking to end their league now.

'The NPL, Isthmian and Southern Leagues are unanimous in wanting to terminate the 2019/20 season immediately. Whether that is done on the basis of determining the final placings via average points per game, or the season is declared null and void cannot be decided until the National League’s intentions are confirmed.'

After such an awesome season, we are always going to have this one be asterisked because of the virus. It sucks.

But we just have to come back next year and blow the doors off again.

Thought it might be good to have a dedicated thread for this, instead of having it all buried among all the other s***e in the 19/20 thread.

The most recent update is that there won't be any football for ages, and at the moment thinking of football makes me queasy because I immediately imagine what it will feel like if we're denied.  I'll let you know if this changes.

In the meantime, feel free to post all news and views on it here.

Yeah I saw that too. It wouldn't be a surprise if some players were more open to it than others.

Hard to argue with much of this though;

Players are adamant they do not want to play behind closed doors because:

They fear for their own safety amid strict Government warnings over social distancing

It could put their own families in jeopardy if they then become infected

Extra strain would be placed on emergency services with ambulances, paramedics and security would be needed at a time when they are already being stretched to the limit

This is where zonal marking is going to come into its own

I think they'll finish the league behind closed doors in summer, sometime.

Bang out the remaining fixtures in 4 weeks. We'll win the league, the players will embrace, leave the field and then lift the trophy after the first game of the new season, whenever that is.

Celebratory elbow bumps.

First player to pretend cough on another player?

I would have said Craig Bellamy but I'll go with Troy Deeney.

Nah, I reckon Deeney is alright.

I'm going Jonjo Shelvey.

Diego Costa already did this with a journalist.

Past players... I'd go for Ruddock.

Current... is Nile Ranger still playing?

When we finally get to play at Goodison I want to smash them to a thousand pieces. The absolute state of that fan base.*

*on twitter anyway.

I change my mind quite frequently about this.

Positives - they have said many times they want to finish the season, the money apparently owed to the TV companies if they don't, the fact that there is now time to play them given the cancellation of Euro 2020, the absurdity of starting a new season without finishing the last.

Negatives - the magnitude and likely longevity of the pandemic may make delay a lot longer than they thought, they must stand to lose even more money if next season is lost entirely, lower leagues already requesting cancellation, players understandable concerns for their own welfare, questions about the legitimacy of the competition if contracts expire and players come and go etc (I get that they will probably say contracts extended for a certain period and players can't sign for anyone else if they don't want to stay).

In short, f*** knows.

Why would there be the tiniest of possibility not to finish this season?

Surely you will finish it no matter what even if it’s in September or December or whatever. And then just adjust next season to fit the schedule, e.g. play each team only once if needed.

I’m not sure why this is even a debate. Might be cause I’m a bit dim obviously.

Because it's us, and people hate the idea that we're winning it

Won’t everyone come back out of shape? And it will be like watching The Legends

players waddling around and that
