Transfer Window Speculation

This is a good read on the on/off Neymar to Barca saga from the summer.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49570224

Posting it here as the TL;DR of it is - both Barca and Real are overstocked with high earning players that they can't shift and the clubs - Barca especially - are loaded with debt.

Puts a good perspective on why I don't think they'll be in for Mane or Salah next summer even if they wanted to be. I've no doubt they'll be making noises about it - but they won't have the cash to be able to pull it off unless they can shift lots of their high earning players - very few of which (Dembele aside?) we'd be prepared to take in a part-ex deal.

Oh yeah - they'll be doing mad offers like "these 3 players for Mane" none of whom we'd want anyway

I imagine it'll be tedious beyond belief, either that or they'll leave us alone and go hunting at Spurs, ManU etc

He had talent. He maybe wasn't suited to our league. Rodgers had no idea how to use him.

True about Rodgers, but Sahin struggled to be a regular anywhere else after he left us

Rodgers had no idea how to use Firmino either did he?

He only had Firmino for about 4 games in fairness.

it sounds like - either a lot of the top clubs are financially stretched. not about to go bust or anything, or that players paint themselves into a corner when they make big money moves since the fee their new clubs want for a sell-on becomes larger still

Something similar in here about why so few big deals happened despite loads more big names being available than usual: https://www.espn.co.uk/football/blog-marcottis-musings/story/3935101/summer-of-unwanted-stars-why-the-likes-of-baleneymar-and-dybala-were-not-sold

Good article that.

Very telling that the list of (mostly) surplus to requirements / getable for the right price players at the start of the article included none of ours.

Hang on - De Ligt cost less than whathisface that went to ManU!!!

re Gethin - yep - it's well written and having read it you can more support our decision not to buy anyone significant this summer. We made about 50m profit which will be useful the next time we want to shop

Jurgen likes to keep his powder dry. He’ll be in for someone dead good next summer. Just you see.

Agreed, and I think it will be one of Jadon Sancho or Kai Havertz.

Will just happen to coincide with a big sale.

we were fortunate that last season we had no major injuries to any of our front 3

this year we are on the same knife edge. keep the front 3 fit and we have a good chance of winning the title

would be nice not to be on that knife edge always.

It would, but in a sense everyone is. If Aguero gets injured city will struggle, the drop off in goals is almost as big as it is for us between him and jesus as salah to origi.

I agree Aguero is special but Jesus has a really good goal scoring record, especially for Brazil. they also have mahrez and sane (when fit) as options for the front 3. we basically have Origi.

If Sané hadn’t got injured he’d be gone by now mind,

They have many options for who could fill in their front 3. The Silva's could both fill in too, particularly the wider of the front 3 positions

Without looking I suspect Jesus has a better goals to minutes than Origi, not that it is necessarily a foolproof guide as to who would do better as a long term replacement.

Interesting one though....would you take Salah missing the season if it meant Aguero doing the same. Don't think I would, even though I do feel that a big injury to Aguero is our best chance of winning the league
