I don't think a CM is on the cards, we've not been linked with many

One of the credibly journos, can't remember which, said we were very serious about Dahoud, to the extent that we'd wait until next year for him.

If that's the case, I could see us keeping Joe rather than signign a stopgap

That's definitely being put out there (from the club?) on Dahoud. All the good journos have heard this. I'm not convinced that's really our plan though. It's a bit illogical. The talk is that Klopp really really rates Dahoud and sees him as an essential player. If that's the case then why wait a year when his expected progress would only making him more expensive?

Maybe there's a kind of pre-contract/loan back kind of deal to be done, I don't know. I have a hunch we'll go back in hard for him this summer with an offer BMG can't turn down.

It's rubbish is what it is.

If Klopp is that serious about him then make BM an offer they can't refuse.

We've got several 'decent' CMs but I think the only one who can be genuinely top class is Can.

Great sides are built in that position, so I think to move forward, even though I like them all in different ways we might need to be ruthless with two of Allen, Lucas and Henderson. If we could sign a real world beater that is, if we are saying that Dahoud could be that good.

Milner stays for his versatility and experience.

Bearing in mind we played 63 games last year and this year, even with good cup runs, it'll be in the high-40s.

We've got too many midfield / attacking midfield for that kind of season. You'll be picking 7 (5 starters / 2 bench) from these 14

DM: Can    Lucas    Stewart

M:  Henderson    Milner    Allen    Grujic

AM: Coutinho    Firmino    Lallana    Mane    Ibe    Ojo    Markovic

I don't think Henderson as club captain coming off an injury hit season will be sold - he'll be given a year to see if he can regain full fitness & form. So if we're bringing in new players here, you've got to think the writing looks on the wall for Allen, Lucas & possibly Ibe

Disagree, sides that win this league are great in both boxes. Midfield just needs to facilitate that.

Ferguson won plenty of league titles towards the end with a midfield whose only real job was to facilitate.

It was arguably more limited than that. It was to not actively f*** up.

the ordinariness of those midfields is probably overstated anyway. it not being the best midfield in the country, isn't quite the same thing.

They persuaded a 47 year old Paul Scholes to come out of retirement at one point to ping passes to Bebe.

Carrick was good though.

Aye. Could be much more expensive in 12 months, with loads more big boys in for him.

Our midfield was utter w*** last season. Games are won in midfield mainly. Offered no protection to the back 4 and no quality to the forward players.

Hopefully Karius will solve our goalkeeping issue and another quality left back is brought in. Another area that needs to be addressed is who takes the set pieces. Crying out for a Gary Mac type player.

Leicester, Arsenal, Spurs, Man City

Which of these 4 have outstanding midfields?

right now, we have no top class CMs. Just lots of quite good ones, some with potential, overs past their peak

I assume Klopp sees this and is trying to rectify it.

City have some talented midfielders, goodness knows they should have, they spent plenty on them, plus they've signed another very good one this summer. Arsenal have upgraded what was a better midfield than ours too. 3 of those teams have stand out midfielders who can be game changers.  We have Can, who is excellent and will get better.

Not saying ours is THAT s***e like, but Henderson needs to get back to the Henderson of 3 seasons ago, cos otherwise it's going to be a struggle for him, and therefore the team.

I'm not massively disagreeing, just saying that the weight on evidence suggests that you want a defensive solidity and plenty of goals before addressing the midfield.

If you look at Spurs as having the strongest midfield in that quartet (which I think they do) they drew a lot of games and that's what put them behind Leicester who were more defensively robust and had 1 more prolific goalscorer than spurs. No surprise that spurs had 2 bad spells that coincided with barren runs for Kane and a period of Lloris being s***e.

It's not as simple as that. Sign the right midfielder or combination of midfielders and you can massively upgrade defence and attack at a stroke.

Gerrard/Alonso/Hamann = winning european cup with Traore as LB, and Baros as lone forward.

the key is a solid spine of real quality

Gk

CBs

CMs

which is why I'd prioritise CM over LB and make do with Moreno if it meant having real quality in CM

I'm all for defensive solidity fist and foremost! Getting a goalie and a new central defender was hugely important (as will be strengthening left back options).  A lot of points where lost last season because of our defensive issues. And sure it's not all about the players, and things certainly improved with better coaching as the season went on. But still, it needed strengthening. Scoring goals was something they managed to do pretty well later last season.

My only issue with our midfield is that it seems so pedestrian, so slow at times. I love Emre Can in there, and think he'll be the key man in the middle, but after him, it just seems kinda 'samey' and uninspiring, no one with the speed of thought or foot to make a real difference. But also, it should be pointed out that IF Henderson can regain his form, things would look far rosier :) Just a worry cos his injury issues are not something thats going away any time soon.

I think one of the problems with our CMs is none of them are genuinely defined as attacking central midfielders or holding midfielders. I'd prefer it if we had more specialist options in that part of the field, Can aside they are all 'a bit of everything' but their roles aren't clearly defined. Versatility is useful, but for the sake of the shape and balance of the team you need to be confident that you have at least one lad who is going to properly protect the defence. Lucas is our only real defensive midfielder and great lad though he is he's not top class, not mobile enough. I'd have loved a fast, aggressive defensive midfielder this summer - someone like Kante.
