Hearts of Iron III and other strategy games (Computer or board)

Has anyone given this game a go (or even seen it) - I've been trying to work out how to play it for over a couple of years now with little success.

 

I suspect that someone like Vic with his mastery of Politics would have a much better chance of getting some insight of how to even approach it. There are plenty of intelligent bods on this site and plenty that probably could get into it far better than I've managed so far..

 

I've read the manuals. I've watched the videos. I've played many a strategic game (Both as kid wargames on massive boards and also PC related from the 8 bits to the present day) but this one seems uncrackable somehow.

 

If no one has seen this one, then is there any general interest and lessons that can be learned or expressed in any of the other myriad games of this genre around? Do people play these for fun? Do people play games at all?
